Minnesota is becoming all too familiar with its coaches dealing with medical issues.

Linebackers coach Mike Sherels was hospitalized and he underwent unexpected surgery on Tuesday. That was after the 31-year-old assistant had a procedure done last Friday, though it isn’t known what exactly it was for.

“Mike is Minnesota football,” Claeys said in a statement. “There are few things that are more important to him than this university and this football program. We ask that you respect his privacy and that of his family during this time.”

One of Minnesota’s top recruiters, Sherels is entering his third season as linebackers coach. The Rochester native played for the team from 2003-07.

Sherels is expected to miss the first part of fall camp. It’s uncertain when he’ll be able to return to the team.
