The first round game of the Maui Invitational between Indiana and Providence turned into the Race Thompson show. The Hoosiers forward recorded a double-double, leading IU to a 79-58 victory on Monday afternoon.

Thompson finished the game with 22 points and 13 rebounds for his first career double-double in an Indiana uniform. He was incredibly efficient while on the floor, shooting 8-of-12 from the floor for the game and converting on 6-of-10 free throws. Thompson was one of four Hoosiers to reach double figures in the win.

Indiana owned a double-digit advantage in the first half, leading 37-24 through the first 20 minutes. Thompson scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, meaning his was halfway to a double-double before starting the second half.

Providence closed the halftime gap to 10 points on two separate occasions in the second half but was never able to seriously chip away at the lead. The Hoosiers were able to maintain a double-digit lead for most of the game and never allowed the Friars an opportunity to make a run.

Al Durham had 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists and Trayce Jackson-Davis added 12 points and 7 boards in the win. Robert Phinissee was the leading assist man with 5 dimes, and also scored 11 points.

With the win, Indiana improved to 2-0 on the season and will advance to the semifinal round of the Maui Invitational, where it’ll play No. 17 Texas. The Longhorns escaped a scare from Davidson, winning 78-76.
