Mel Tucker earns national recognition following MSU’s upset win over Northwestern

Michigan State pulled off its second major upset of the college football season on Saturday, stunning No. 8 Northwestern 29-20 in East Lansing. That victory landed head coach Mel Tucker some national honors.
Tucker was named the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week after leading the Spartans to the upset victory. The team improved to 2-4 on the season, snapping a three-game losing streak.
It was the second ranked win of the season for Michigan State in 2020. The Spartans defeated Michigan in Week 2, when the Wolverines were a Top 25 team. Tucker became the first MSU head coach since Nick Saban to defeat UM in his first game in the rivalry series.

Michigan State is 2-4 this season, but the two victories have been more than enough to build on for the Spartans. With three games left on the schedule, there’s still a chance the team could finish with a winning record in Tucker’s first season, though it would be quite the challenge.
Left on the schedule for the Spartans are Ohio State, Penn State and whoever they’ll play in Week 9, which is a cross-division matchup for Champions Week.
