Drug case results in probation for former Michigan State basketball player

Keith Appling will receive probation for drug related charges stemming from an arrest this past February.
The former Michigan State player, a four-year starter, was arrested eight months ago when he was found to be in possession of 19 grams of heroin, with TMZ noting that amount to be approixtely the size of a golf ball. In October, he pled guilty to multiple charges stemming from the arrest, most notably “delivery or manufacture of less than 50 grams of a controlled substance.”
He learned on Wednesday that he will be on probation for 18 months. During that time, he must meet several requirements including no alcohol or drug use, attendance and completion of a treatment program as well as being gainfully employed for 30 hours on a weekly basis.
A former McDonald’s All-American, Appling averaged 10.6 points per game over a four-year career where he had 142 appearances with 124 starts. After his senior season in 2013-14, the now 28-year old Appling had a brief NBA career and has played overseas, most recently in Italy.
