It’s a lot of Reese’s Pieces for the Fighting Rece Davises.

One of the 2020 season’s great meta-moments was when Joey Galloway, the cocky former-Ohio State Buckeye’s receiver, called Northwestern’s football team “a bunch of Rece Davises,” in the run up to the Wildcats game against Wisconsin, a reference to his be-spectacled colleague known for a smooth television delivery and not any exploits as a former high-level jock.

Galloway meant Northwestern, the nerd squad, was about to get nerd-bombed by a real football team in the mighty Badgers from Madison. But fate intervened to embarrass Galloway, and vindicated Rece, as the Wildcats upset Wisconsin 17-7 at Ryan Field in Evanston to run their record to 5-0.

Now a Northwestern fan has brought the joke home, shipping fifty-five pounds worth of the famous Reese’s candy to head coach Pat Fitzgerald to deal out to his players. The package came with a sweet note from the sender, whose mother is a nurse and has presumably done a lot of hard duty in this year of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“To all the Rece Davises, keep up the good work,” the note, printed on the receipt, read. “Enjoy some Reese’s on me. Coach Fitz, my mother is a nurse and your call out on national TV in these times meant a lot. Enjoy! GO CATS”

Sadly for Northwestern, they were upset as a heavy favorite the next week at Michigan State to fall to 5-1. But the Cats are still the default Big Ten West champion and will face the winner of the East division in the league’s championship game Dec. 19. Their game Saturday against Minnesota was cancelled due to Covid-19 protocols, and the Wildcats will finish their regular season Dec. 12 at home against in-state rival Illinois in the Land of Lincoln game.

Wonder if there will be any candy left by then. Fifty-five pounds isn’t much when you’re talking about a football team.
