I can’t say I would’ve predicted Penn State-Rutgers talk in the first hour of College GameDay on Saturday. But it’s 2020, so I guess prepare for anything?
The crew jumped into discussion of this Big Ten East matchup on Saturday. The crew appears to like what they’ve seen out of the Scarlet Knights under Greg Schiano.
Rutgers heads into Saturday’s tilt against the Nittany Lions with some confidence after going into West Lafayette and defeating Purdue last week. That win and the overall effort in 2020 seems to have captured the attention of the GameDay folks and has them believing in another Scarlet Knight win.
“I’ll take Rutgers,” David Pollack said. “By the way, [Greg] Schiano has been awesome! If not for Pat Fitzgerald and Tom Allen, he could be Coach of the Year.”
This is true stuff coming from Pollack. In his second stint in Piscataway, Schiano has at least gotten the Scarlet Knights out from rock bottom and ended a long Big Ten losing streak in game No. 1 of the season.
Not everyone is as on board with Rutgers. Kirk Herbstreit, who is in some Big Ten fans’ doghouse currently, liked what he saw out of Penn State last week as the Nittany Lions finally got win No. 1 against Michigan.
“They’re averaging 30 points per game,” Herbstreit said of Rutgers. “This team, for the last four years, averaged 14 points a game. Schiano is a defensive guy, so they deserve credit.
“I think Penn State showed all of us something [against Michigan]. They’re still fighting, there’s still talent on the roster. I like Penn State.”
But wait, there’s more dissent. Desmond Howard wasn’t quite as on board with the Nittany Lions.
“Schiano gave them some confidence, and that’s what they needed ” Howard said. “I’m going with Rutgers.”
This surely won’t be the most memorable game to pick for the crew this morning. But I’m sure there are some fans for Penn State and Rutgers who are keeping track.
