Northwestern is in the mix for a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game and potentially the College Football Playoff. And with the clinching of a championship game appearance this past Saturday, Northwestern has now joined an elite group of teams.
The Wildcats are one of just four teams to make multiple appearances in the Big Ten Championship Game, joining Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State in that list. That’s a pretty accomplished list considering that the bluebloods such as Michigan and Penn State haven’t done that.

The Nittany Lions have just a single appearance in the championship, which started in 2011. Michigan has yet to make the game.
Northwestern is primed for another bowl appearance, quite an accomplishment considering that the Wildcats previously were a doormat in the Big Ten. They have just five wins in program history from their 15 bowl appearances; three of which have come since 2016.
They are 5-1, having beaten Michigan State on Saturday 29-20.
Wisconsin leads all programs with appearances in the Big Ten Championship Game (6) followed by Ohio State (5) and then Michigan State (3). The Buckeyes are 4-1 in the game, the most wins in the championship’s brief history.
