The agenda for Wednesday morning’s B1G athletic directors’ meeting just got a little more important.
On Tuesday, Michigan announced it has canceled the annual rivalry game with Ohio State due to concerns over COVID-19. It’s the first time in over 100 years “The Game” will not be played on the gridiron.
And the cancellation also brings up another important question: Will the B1G amend the rules to allow Ohio State to compete for the conference title?
Because the game has been canceled, Ohio State will finish the regular season 5-0 (unless the Buckeyes can schedule an opponent at the last second). That means the team falls one short of hitting the 6-game minimum requirement to compete in the B1G Championship Game.
According to CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd, there has been no conversation about altering the 6-game requirement at this time. However, over the weekend, Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez says it’s something the league could look at if Ohio State didn’t hit the 6-game requirement.
We’ll see if anything changes now that the Michigan-Ohio State game is off.
