B1G commissioner Kevin Warren comments on cancellation of Michigan-Ohio State

For the first time since the end of World War I, Michigan and Ohio State will not meet on the gridiron during the fall.

“The Game” will not happen this year.

On Tuesday, Michigan announced the cancellation of the game with Ohio State scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12 in Columbus. University athletic department officials cited an “increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases and student-athletes in quarantine over the past week. … The decision was made after conversations with medical experts, health department officials and university administration.”

For the Buckeyes, who currently have a 5-0 record, the cancelation results in falling short of the six games required by the Big Ten to be eligible for the championship game scheduled for Dec. 19.

The Big Ten Conference released a statement Tuesday afternoon about the cancelation.

“The conference will deal with Ohio State-Michigan cancellation by “continu[ing] to be transparent.. and will work through these issues,” said Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren.

“We need to remain fluid and remain nimble during these times. This has never happened before.”
