Indiana AD releases statement following B1G’s decision to put Ohio State in conference title game

Indiana has been a bit overlooked as college football fans debated whether or not the Big Ten should get rid of its six-game minimum requirement for winning a division championship.

However, the Big Ten’s decision to remove that requirement and put the Buckeyes (5-0) in the conference title game means the Hoosiers will miss out on that opportunity.

Indiana is 6-1 with its lone loss coming against Ohio State earlier this season. If the six-game minimum would have been upheld, the Hoosiers would have been declared winners of the Big Ten East.

Shortly after that decision was announced, Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson released a statement.

“Although we understand the conference’s decision, we are disappointed,” Dolson wrote. “From the start of the year, we have said we can only control what we can control. We had a chance to earn our spot in the Big Ten Championship Game, but ultimately fell a touchdown short on the road against a great Ohio State team.

“We look forward to resuming activities and completing one of the best seasons in our school’s history.”

Dolson also points out that this Indiana team is one of only two squads in the country with three top-25 victories. The Hoosiers have also matched a program record for Big Ten wins with six.

Indiana and Purdue mutually canceled their scheduled game for this weekend due to COVID-19 cases within both programs. However, Indiana is currently scheduled to face an opponent on Championship Weekend Dec. 19 if its COVID-19 situation improves.
