SEC head coach fired following season finale

Gus Malzahn is out at Auburn, the SEC program announcing on Sunday.
The firing of Malzahn is a bit of a surprise, given that Auburn did finish the SEC regular season a respectable albeit disappointing 6-4. With a typical out of conference schedule in a regular year, the record likely could and would have been better.
In eight seasons at Auburn, Malzahn compiled a 68-35 record. He was, however, 2-5 in bowl games and the program lacked a signature win this season, struggling against the likes of Alabama and Georgia.
Auburn Director of Athletics Allen Greene announced Sunday a leadership change for Auburn football as Gus Malzahn will no longer direct the program.

The highwater mark of his tenure was his first season with the program in 2013 when the Tigers went 12-2 and lost in the BCS Championship Game. Five times his teams finished ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll.
Auburn started the season ranked No. 11, reaching a peak of No. 7 in the second week of the season following a season opening win over a ranked Kentucky. They are currently unranked as they struggled in the tail end of the year.
They closed out the season with two losses in their final three games, including being badly beaten by No. 1 Alabama, a 42-13 loss on the road. A 24-10 win over Mississippi State to close out the season was not enough to salvage Malzahn’s job.
