Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery hits career milestone with Hawkeyes

Iowa men’s basketball had little trouble once again on Sunday as the No. 3 Hawkeyes steamrolled Northern Illinois 106-53.
Though the game was on brand for the Hawkeyes — Luka Garza dominated like he has all season — it was a historic moment for head coach Fran McCaffery as he picked up his 200th win as Iowa head coach.

It’s McCaffery’s 200th and sixth this season as the leading man in Iowa City. His team continues to roll so far as conference play approaches.

McCaffery, a Philadelphia native, is in his 11th season as head coach. He slowly worked his way up the coaching ranks. His first head coaching gig came in 1985 with Lehigh. He was there until 1988 and then went on to be an assistant at Notre Dame. He went back to being a head coach in 1999 with UNC Greensboro. After his time there, McCaffrey moved onto Siena. He spent five seasons there and won the MAAC Tournament three times, sending the Saints to the NCAA Tournament.
In March 2010, McCaffery moved on to Iowa. He replaced Todd Lickliter and has brought success while in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have made the NCAA Tournament four times under McCaffery. This season, he might have his best shot at a long run in the tournament with the talented group he has.
