Kane Wommack reveals plans for remainder of season after being named South Alabama head coach

For the second consecutive season, one of Indiana’s coordinators is being hired away for a head coaching position.
Last season, it was offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer departing for the head coaching gig at Fresno State. This year, it’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. He’s on his way to being the head coach at South Alabama.
With this news in mind, Wommack discussed his plan on finishing out this season and assuming that head coaching role.

This plan of waiting out the season before moving on is similar to how DeBoer handled the situation last season.
Wommack, just 33 years old, has certainly found his way on the up and up. His first coordinator gig came at Eastern Illinois after being a fullback and tight end at Arkansas and Southern Miss. He spent two seasons there before moving on to South Alabama to be the team’s defensive coordinator and linebacker coach.
In 2018, Wommack moved on to Bloomington to coach the linebackers. For the past two seasons, Wommack has been Indiana’s defensive coordinator.
Though it has to be tough for Tom Allen to watch two coordinators leave in as many seasons, it’s also a sign that he must be doing something right if his coordinators are getting hired for head coaching jobs.
