ACC officially announces Jim Phillips as next commissioner

It’s official. Jim Phillips is on his way to becoming the next ACC commissioner.
The league’s board of governors approved Phillips’ hiring earlier Monday, but the ACC formally announced the hiring of the former Northwestern athletics director around 1 p.m. ET on Monday.

As the tweet notes, Phillips enters this job with a wealth of experience. He has helped build up Northwestern’s athletic department, most notably football. The Wildcats are playing in their second Big Ten championship game in four years.
Phillips is set to replace John Swofford, who is retiring after 24 years of leading the conference. Phillips was a candidate to become the next Big Ten commissioner before the league decided on Kevin Warren, who hasn’t been well received so far based on his handling of football and other sports in the pandemic.
Phillips departs Evanston after helping Northwestern build an athletic center that houses the school’s football program amongst other things. He also helped oversee the renovation of Welsh-Ryan Arena.
