Michigan landed their quarterback of the future on Wednesday during the Early Signing Period, a player who was a social media leader in helping to keep Wolverine fans and fellow commits focused during what has been a disappointing season in Ann Arbor.

J.J. McCarthy, a five-star recruit from Illinois who played his high school football at IMG Academy in Florida is officially a Wolverine, signing with the program on Wednesday. The highly-rated quarterback is the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the nation according to 247Sports.

Earlier this season during Michigan’s rough start to the year, McCarthy became a cheerleader for the team, leading the voices against all the hand-wringing about the team’s sluggishly bad start.

The Wolverines started the season ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll but quickly fell out of the polls with several bad losses. They are currently 2-4 on the season, their last two scheduled games cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols.

McCarthy is the highest ranked recruit in Michigan’s class and their only five-star recruit. The Wolverines have the No. 9 recruiting class in the nation heading into Wednesday.
