Penn State DE declines additional year of eligibility from NCAA, will move into business world

With all of the craziness going on in 2020, the NCAA made the move to grant anyone playing football this fall another year of eligibility.
Though same make take that extra year, Penn State defensive end Shane Simmons is not one of them. The senior defensive end elected to decline the extra year of eligibility. He shared this decision on Twitter on Monday with some reasoning as he’s poised to enter the business world.

It appears that this decision isn’t being made with any hard feelings toward the Penn State program.
That makes sense. Especially since Simmons was an impactful player up until his decision. This season, Simmons played in all nine of the Nittany Lions’ games, finishing with 16 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks and a pass breakup in 2020.
As a junior, Simmons appeared in all 13 games. That was part of a four-year career at Penn State that was filled with appearances and key tackles.
This is one of the first decisions we’ve seen about this extra year of eligibility. It will be interesting to see who else follows Simmons or elects to play out the extra year.
