The special teams situation should be in good shape at Illinois for the 2021 season.

On Saturday afternoon, kicker James McCourt announced that he will be returning to the Fighting Illini for the 2021 season. He made the announcement with a post on Twitter, saying “See you in Dublin.”

Illinois is scheduled to open the 2021 season in Dublin, Ireland against Nebraska. But because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s still up in the air as to whether or not the two teams will play the game internationally next fall.

McCourt attempted 10 field goals for the Illini in 2019, converting on 6. He was also a perfect 15-of-15 on extra point attempts for the season. He was also responsible for a game-winning 46-yard field goal attempt against Rutgers, leading the Illini to a 23-20 victory.

In 2019, McCourt drilled a game-winning kick from 39 yards out to push Illinois to a 24-23 upset victory over No. 6 Wisconsin in Champaign. It remains to be one of the biggest boots of his career.

During his time in Champaign, McCourt has converted on 19-of-29 field goal attempts and has missed only 1 PAT try on 58 attempts.
