If there’s a story we probably aren’t talking about in sports, it’s probably the train wreck that is the 2020-21 Kentucky basketball season.
The Wildcats entered their SEC opener on Saturday at 1-6. You read that correctly. Just one win in a shortened non-conference season for John Calipari’s squad.
They opened conference play against an average Mississippi State squad. During that game, it appeared that Coach Cal’s anger reached a head as he got T’d up not once, but twice in a meltdown that resulted in an ejection.

At the time, Kentucky trailed by six with under 10 minutes left in regulation. In the moment, it seemed like the story of the game. However, it soon became just one part of it.
The game went on to double overtime. Eventually, Kentucky’s Dontaie Allen willed the Wildcats to victory thanks in part to seven three-pointers. That 78-73 win broke Kentucky’s winless streak and put Coach Cal’s squad at 1-0 in SEC play.
This season has been beyond just a struggle for the Wildcats. This might be a step in the right direction to righting the ship. It’s a shame their coach wasn’t there to see it on the bench.
