One of the best advertisements for Illinois head coach Bret Bielema scored a touchdown on Sunday.

New England Patriots running back James White put his team up 7-0 midway through the first quarter of what will surely be a win over the hapless New York Jets. The seven-yard touchdown catch on a ‘V Route’ from quarterback Cam Newton served as an on-the-field endorsement of Bielema, who coached him at Wisconsin.

And White has apparently decided to back-up his play with an endorsement of his former head coach at the Badgers. Bielema was named Illinois’ head coach last month, replacing Lovie Smith.

White was a fourth round pick of the Patriots in the 2014 NFL Draft. In 2019, Bielema was the Patriots defensive line coach, putting him on the same sideline once again with his star running back in Madison.

At Wisconsin, White was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year in 2010 and twice was selected All-Big Ten.
