The Heisman Trophy winner was revealed Tuesday evening with Alabama’s Devonta Smith taking home the illustrious award. He becomes the first wide receiver to win the award since Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991.

Smith was one of four finalists with Alabama QB Mac Jones, Florida QB Kyle Trask, and Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence rounding out the list. Ohio State’s Justin Fields finished seventh in the voting, behind Iowa State running back Breece Hall.

Ahead of the Heisman unveiling, ESPN’s Maria Taylor was asked if Fields deserved to be a finalist for the award. Taylor said it was possible to make a case for Fields, but Ohio State playing in just six games certainly played against Fields.

“I believe in a lot of ways Justin Fields was (deserving),” said Taylor. “The conversation obviously coming into the Playoff as a whole for Ohio State was ‘Well, you only played six games, so how can we truly be sure who you are?’

“Unfortunately for Fields, that last opportunity he had to show us everything about him was the B1G Championship Game and he didn’t play well. And I don’t even blame him for that because his top target – Chris Olave – wasn’t in it.”
