Penn State has seen its tight ends coach make the jump to the NFL, and it appears that move has impacted the 2022 recruiting class.
Earlier in the week, it was reported that Tyler Bowen, Penn State’s co-OC and TEs coach under James Franklin, was leaving Happy Valley. Bowen is expected to join Urban Meyer’s staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
On Friday morning, the Nittany Lions lost one commitment from an elite tight end for 2022. That prospect is Holden Staes, a four-star prospect out of Georgia.
Here is Staes’ announcement from Twitter:

According to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings, Staes is the No. 6 TE and No. 204 recruit nationally for the class of 2022. He holds a host of offers from Power 5 schools across the country.
As things currently stand, Penn State still holds a commitment from fellow four-star TE Jerry Cross for the class of 2022. He is rated as the No. 8 TE nationally by the composite rankings and has been committed since July. It will be interesting to see if Bowen’s departure also has an impact on Cross’ decision.
