Ohio State assistant Al Washington is reportedly on the verge of becoming Tennessee’s next defensive coordinator.

That’s according to a report from FootballScoop.com, who cite multiple sources.

Washington has served as Ohio State’s linebackers coach for the last two seasons. He’s a Boston College alum who has also coached for Cincinnati and Michigan in recent years. Prior to that, he served as an assistant for BC from 2012-16.

Washington would replace Kevin Steele, who was expected to run Tennessee’s defense at one point earlier this offseason. That changed when the Vols hired AD Danny White and coach Josh Heupel away from UCF.

This seems like a great hire for the Vols, was Washington has received great reviews during his time at Ohio State. He’s also a Columbus, Ohio, native, so prying him away from his hometown is another accomplishment.

With the Buckeyes, Washington was part of a staff that landed the nation’s No. 2 overall recruiting class in 2021, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.
