Tennessee’s attempt to lure Al Washington away from Ohio State has failed, according to a report.

Austin Ward of Lettermen Row reported on Thursday evening that Washington will remain in Columbus, turning down an opportunity to join Josh Heupel’s staff at Tennessee. Earlier this week, a report from FootballScoop indicated that the Volunteers were “close” to a deal with the linebackers coach.

Instead, Washington will remain on Ryan Day’s staff for at least another season. The 2020 campaign was the second year with the Buckeyes for Washington, who had previously spent the 2018 season at Michigan.

Washington is a native of Columbus.

Ohio State is coming off back-to-back seasons in which it reached the College Football Playoff and played in the national championship at the end of the 2020 season. The Buckeyes have won four-straight B1G titles.

Before arriving at Ohio State, Washington had stops at NC State, Slippery Rock, Elon, Boston College, Cincinnati and Michigan.
