Report: Ex-Virginia Tech assistant expected to join Maryland staff as WRs coach

It sounds like Mike Locksley is close to landing his next wide receivers coach.
Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports is reporting that former Virginia Tech assistant coach Zohn Burden is expected to become the next receivers coach at Maryland. The Terrapins have been looking to replace Joker Phillips, who was hired away by NC State in January.
Phillips had served as the wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator for the Terps since Locksley took over the program in 2019. He’s taking over 30 years of experience with him to Raleigh.
No formal announcement has been made at this time, per Ermann’s report.
Burden was at Virginia Tech from 2015-19, starting his career with the Hokies as the wide receivers coach. From 2016-19, he transitioned to running backs coach on Justine Fuente’s staff.
Prior to his time at Virginia Tech, Burden was the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Old Dominion from 2012-14. He was also the defensive backs coach with the school from 2007-2010. He had a brief, one-year stop at Richmond in 2011 when he was the wide receivers coach for the Spiders.
Maryland ended the 2020 season with a 2-3 record.
