Penn State CB steps away from football due to injuries

Penn State will have one less cornerback on the roster this spring.
On Monday, the Nittany Lions released their initial roster for the 2021 football season, and missing from the list was cornerback Donovan Johnson. Because of injuries, the defensive back has decided that his career in a uniform is over, though he will continue to be part of the program in an off-field role.
“I know it was difficult for Donovan Johnson to step away from his playing career, but ultimately this is what’s best for him,” James Franklin said in a statement to The Athletic. “We are excited to still have him as a major part of our program as he continues to work towards his Penn State degree.”

Johnson missed the entire 2020 season due to an injury.
During his career at Penn State, Johnson appeared in 14 games and is credited 18 tackles and 3 pass break-ups. Most of his playing time came in 2018, when he played in 12 contests for the Nittany Lions. In 2019, he made just two appearances.
Penn State finished the 2020 season with a 4-5 record.
