Penn State blew out a bruised and struggling Minnesota squad Wednesday night, edging ahead of the Gophers in the regular season B1G standings.

Just over a month ago, the thought of the Nittany Lions finishing ahead of Minnesota in the B1G seemed laughable. The Gophers were a top-25 team, proving to be juggernauts at home while susceptible on the road. Unfortunately, injuries at the wrong time and a number of letdown performances have sent Minnesota tumbling down the conference.

On Wednesday, it was Penn State’s turn to take on the Gophers, drilling them behind a balanced attack that saw five Nittany Lions in double figures. Myreon Jones led the way with 17 points on 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range with John Harrar chipping in a double-double.

For Minnesota, Marcus Carr scored a game-high 22 points, but it was not enough as the Gophers were blown out, 84-65. It was the sixth-straight loss for Minnesota, including losses to Northwestern and Nebraska, the two teams at the bottom of the conference.

The loss also ensured that the Gophers would finish the regular season without a road victory to their credit. Of Minnesota’s 13 conference losses, 10 have come on the road.

Once a lock to make the NCAA Tournament, Minnesota is squarely outside of the field and would need a miracle run as champions of the B1G Tournament to make the dance.
