Iowa’s 77-73 win over Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon didn’t come without controversy.

With 21 seconds left in the game, Wisconsin guard Brad Davison drew a foul that would have put him at the line with a chance to bring the Badgers within one point.

Davison was attempting to catch a pass but got tangled up with Iowa’s Keegan Murray.

After going to the monitor, officials ruled it was a double foul — including a hook-and-hold flagrant on Davison. That meant both teams got to shoot two free throws, and Iowa would then get possession.

The Badgers still had a shot to tie the game in the final seconds, but were unable to convert.

After the game, Wisconsin coach Greg Gard let out his frustrations on the officials, the league and how the hook-and-hold rule is officiated.

“It appears to have become a Brad Davison rule,” Gard told reporters via Zoom. Where it’s become, quite frankly, a joke. Anytime there’s a foul or a question, the opponents are yelling to the officials about the monitor, to go to the monitor. I saw the play. If college basketball is headed in this direction, we’re in big trouble. It sickens me that we have games decided like this. That rule was not put in place for that. That was for safety of players and it was for post play.

“I feel bad for Brad Davison, the kid is a great kid, he plays his ass off, but he continues to get screwed by this. And how the officials and the league and opponents have continued to just call that out and put a spotlight on that and deaden the ball. It’s become sickening, really.”
