Iowa’s Luka Garza discusses winning second consecutive B1G POY Award

Luke Garza made a bit of history, capturing his second consecutive B1G Player of the Year Award on Tuesday.

With the announcement, Garza becomes just the third player in conference history to win the POY Award twice. He joins Michigan State’s Mateen Cleaves (1998-99) and Ohio State’s Jim Jackson (1991-92) as multiple winners.

After capturing the award, the all-time leading scorer for the Hawkeyes joined BTN’s Dave Revsine to discuss winning the award. Garza tried to deflect the attention, saying he came back for his senior season because he wanted to be around this group of teammates:

“I’m just really thankful for my coaches and teammates. When I made the decision to come back, I wanted to be a part of this group, I wanted to be a part of this team, and I’ve never doubted that decision for a second,” said Garza. “I’m really thankful for these guys.”

He also praised his teammates, saying any great big man needs good teammates to help get them the ball:

“As a big man, you need to have great teammates around you if you want to be any good,” Garza explained. “I played with some of the best guards in Hawkeye history…I’m just really thankful for all these guys and my family.”

While the award is nice, Garza did admit that he is only thinking about making a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Hopefully, the Hawkeyes can get March started off with a deep run in the B1G Tournament. Iowa will be in action Friday when they will face the winner of Wisconsin vs Penn State/Nebraska.
