Ohio State basketball appeared primed for a deep run this March, but a Round of 64 win was just not meant to be.
On Friday, the Buckeyes squared off against 15-seed Oral Roberts. While E.J. Liddell had a fantastic game and Duane Washington Jr. scored 18 points, it was not enough to stop the Golden Eagles.
Following the hard-fought loss, Liddell shared screenshots to his personal Twitter account with multiple messages he received following the game. The messages included hateful comments and physical threats throughout. Ohio State has reportedly reached out to authorities to investigate the source of the comments.
Head coach Chris Holtmann and AD Gene Smith both released statements on Saturday morning. They supported Liddell while also noting that the university would take the necessary actions to deal with the threats directed at the sophomore forward.
Ohio State leadership was not the only group to respond to the comments. Star defensive lineman Haskell Garrett for the Buckeyes football team also put out a statement on Twitter.
“To E.J. I know I might not know you that much, but you’re a Buckeye and you left it all out on the court,” wrote Garrett. “I know you’ll be back better and stronger next season and I have your back!”
Garrett also praised the entire basketball team for fighting hard in the opportunity that was given to them:
