No. 2-seeded Iowa defeated Grand Canyon 86-74 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Iowa star Luka Garza was the leading scorer, pouring in 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting. The majority of that damage came in the second half, as he scored 16 points after the break.
Joe Wieskamp (14 points), Jordan Bohannon (13 points) and Keegan Murray (13 points) were the other Hawkeyes to score in double figures.
Iowa scored the ball efficiently at all three levels in this game. The Hawkeyes shot 53.7 percent from the field, 45.5 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line.
This was a dominant performance overall from Iowa. The Hawkeyes easily survived foul trouble from Garza in the first half, and then cruised after the break.
Iowa will play Oregon in the second round on Monday. The Ducks advanced earlier on Saturday without playing, as the game was declared a “no contest” due to COVID-19 issues with VCU.
