The biggest question facing Ohio State this offseason is the quarterback situation. After two years as the starter in Columbus, Justin Fields is moving on to the NFL, leaving an opening under center.

C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller III and Kyle McCord are the three guys battling for the starting job this spring and into fall. None have thrown a pass in a college game.

It’s a tall order for Ryan Day’s team, filling the shoes of arguably one of the best quarterbacks in program history. But so far, the Ohio State head coach likes what he sees from his three potential starters early on in spring camp. He made it clear, though, that it’s still way too early to know who the leader is for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart.

Per Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch, Day says that Stroud, McCord and Miller are all throwing the ball well in spring practice. However, none of them have separated themselves in the competition and the battle is expected to go into fall.

Both Stroud and Miller took snaps last season, appearing in two games each. Stroud had one rush for 48 yards and a touchdown in Ohio State’s 52-12 win over Michigan State. McCord had 2 carries for 23 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes’ season-opening victory over Nebraska.

McCord is the new kid in town, a former 5-star quarterback and a member of Ohio State’s loaded 2021 recruiting class.

So, as curious as everyone is to learn who will take over under center for the Buckeyes next fall, it sounds like that question won’t be answered until closer to kickoff.
