FCS team opts out of remainder of season after 5 games

Wofford College is deciding to end the spring football season after playing five games. The school released a statement on the decision this week.
In its statement, Wofford stated that the combination of COVID-19 opt-outs and injuries have left the team without the minimum number of players at certain position groups the Southern Conference requires. The Terriers had two games remaining on the schedule in the spring season.
“We are disappointed that we are unable to complete the spring season,” said Richard Johnson, the athletic director at Wofford. “Our student-athletes and coaching staff have put forth a lot of hard work to get to this point and we appreciate all that they have done tackling the multitude of challenges that the past year has presented.”
Wofford finished the season with a 1-4 record, with its lone win coming over Mercer in the season opener. A game against East Tennessee State on March 6 had been canceled earlier in the season.
The two remaining games that were canceled were a trip to Western Carolina on April 10 and a road visit to Furman on April 17.
