Ohio State will be back in front of fans this weekend for the team’s annual spring game, but there will not be any tackling during the weekend event. Head coach Ryan Day said during his appearance on 97.1 The Fan that it won’t be part of the scrimmage.

It’s not an uncommon approach to the spring game, in an effort to minimize the risk of injuries. Some programs find it productive to host a traditional game while others work on team drills and run a scrimmage without tackling.

Day did confirm that the Buckeyes have done a fair amount of tackling during the course of spring practice this year.

“We’ve actually done a good amount of tackling this spring,” Day said, per Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. “There’s been three or four practices where we’ve had 60-plus snaps of guys getting tackled to the ground and live scrimmages. So we’re gonna stay up to kind of stay healthy for the game.”

Ohio State will allow just over 19,000 fans to attend Saturday’s spring game, a chance for folks to catch a glimpse of the 2021 Buckeyes. The school’s marching band will also be back inside The Horseshoe.

Saturday’s spring game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. ET and will air on Big Ten Network.
