Purdue basketball hires assistant coach from Ohio State

Purdue is hiring current Ohio State assistant Terry Johnson to a similar role, the Boilermakers announced on Thursday.

Johnson has spent the last four seasons with Chris Holtmann and Ohio State. He previously spent 10 years as an assistant at Butler.
Earlier this season, Holtmann went out of his way in a press conference to praise Johnson’s impact on the Buckeyes.
“We have a guy on our staff, Terry Johnson, who I believe in at an unbelievably high level,” Holtmann said in February, via 247Sports. “I believe he deserves an opportunity [to be a head coach]. Terry has handled our defense from Butler through Ohio State. He’s been a part of every team we’ve had that’s gone to the NCAA Tournament.
“He’s got an unbelievable relationship with guys. Part of the reason I feel compelled to work so hard in this job is to help guys have opportunities. I really believe that he deserves an opportunity. Part of what we’re doing with this particular game … is bringing awareness hopefully for increased opportunities for African-American coaches in our profession.”
Purdue and Ohio State are both expected to be contenders in the Big Ten next season.
