Ohio State coach Ryan Day explains ‘Ideal’ time to name a starting quarterback

Ohio State coach Ryan Day met with the media on Friday afternoon at the conclusion of Ohio State’s spring practice season.
The biggest thing to watch throughout the spring was the Buckeyes’ quarterback battle between C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller and Kyle McCord.
Unsurprisingly, Day did not name a starting quarterback for this fall. However, he did share when he hopes that time will come.
Day said it would be “ideal” if one of the three quarterbacks in the competition are able to separate themselves at the beginning of fall camp. However, he also said he would take the competition up until the week of the first game if necessary.
Day also said he wanted that trio of quarterbacks to focus on spending more time watching film this summer.
Ryan Day said it would be ideal to name a starting QB earlier in preseason camp so that QB can get the majority of reps leading up to the season opener, but they won't name a starter until one separates himself from the other two. They'll take it to game week if they have to.

Whoever replaces Justin Fields will have big shoes to fill. Fields was excellent over the last two seasons with the Buckeyes, completing 68.4 percent of his passes for 5,373 yards and 63 touchdowns.
Stroud is likely the favorite in this competition, but any of the three could be starting when Week 1 rolls around later this fall.
