10 things I'm absolutely overreacting to after Week 6 in the B1G
Here’s a question for you: Was this the worst weekend of B1G football of the season? It sure didn’t have the kind of excitement we had hoped for, that’s for sure.
Most of Saturday’s games were decided in lopsided fashion, and the two one-possession games were low-scoring affairs. Those are great every now and then, but we need SOME offense to keep us entertained. It just wasn’t in the cards this week.
I’m not going to lie to you, the B1G didn’t provide me with much material this weekend. Hopefully things get a little better next Saturday. But, this is a fairly appropriate feather in the cap of a mediocre weekend of football in the Midwest.
B(or)1(n)G
Of the seven games played in the B1G this weekend, there were two that were decided by one possession. The other five were decided by three touchdowns or more. I know we all love B1G football and we’ll forever continue to support it, but this was such a boring week for the conference. Hopefully we don’t have to endure another one of these.
Nate “The (not so) Great” Stanley
Saturday was Nate Stanley’s chance to prove he could win a big game on the road. Instead, he threw three interceptions, took too many hits and dropped to 0-5 against ranked teams on the road. In his defense, the offensive line play was poor. But this pretty much crushed any hope of having a statue outside Kinnick Stadium.
You, me, my mother and your grandmother outrushed Purdue
Purdue finished with -30 rushing yards. So, yes, literally everyone with 0 yards on Saturday outrushed the Boilermakers. I wonder if Purdue would’ve finished with more yards on the ground if they just decided to take a knee on all of their offensive possessions.
A new Nunzi-Low for Rutgers
You won’t believe this but firing Chris Ash midseason actually accomplished nothing. Rutgers got blown out at home by a Maryland team that just got boat raced by Penn State. And Art Sitkowski and Raheem Blackshear are calling it a season. Maybe forfeit the rest of the season?
Mark Dantonio — forward thinker
After a 34-10 loss to Ohio State, Dantonio said “we’ll always be defined on what we do next.” I don’t know, Mark. Seems like what you’re doing now is probably pretty relevant, as well.
Bye, bye to this Lovie guy
I tried to defend Lovie Smith and keeping him around another year. A 40-17 loss out of a bye week? I expect Josh Whitman to send him a text message that basically says “Yeah…this just isn’t working out for me.”
What has happened to the Northwestern we know and love?
Seriously, Northwestern is always supposed to navigate ways to win games they shouldn’t and surprise everyone by being in the B1G West race at least until November. At this rate, the only race the Cats will be in at the end of the season will be with Illinois and Purdue to see who finishes last in the division.
Wan’Dale, more like Gone’Dale
He’s really, really fast. That’s all.
Justin Fields isn’t entirely invincible
Well what do you know, there is a mortal side to Fields. I thought he was incapable of throwing interceptions. Even passes that could’ve been intercepted throughout the season seemed to be dropped. I guess all good things must come to an end. Betcha he doesn’t throw one next week, though.
I’ll have whatever Jim Harbaugh is having
Following a dominating 10-point win, Harbaugh said he believes the offense is “hitting their stride” in every way. Again, they scored 10 points. Two weeks ago, the Wolverines scored 14 points. I don’t know what’s in Harbaugh’s milk, but I’ll definitely have some if it creates such a positive and enthusiastic mindset.
