What an incredible Saturday in mid-October in the Big Ten. We had “little brothers” sniping at each other and acting childish, we had snow in Madison and we had a big upset in West Lafayette. From morning to midnight, it was an awesome day.

(As an aside, what happened to fall? Why the hell is winter here already?)

So let’s take a look at all this craziness in Week 8 Let’s get right to it. Here are 10 things I am absolutely overreacting to in the Big Ten after Week 8:

1. Why would I overreact to Purdue’s upset of Ohio State?

There’s no need to overreact to Purdue’s amazing 49-20 win over No. 2 Ohio State, and with good reason. I told you FRIDAY that this was going to happen in my Upset Special story. The Boilermakers have now won four games in a row after starting the season 0-3, with two wins coming at home over ranked teams. What a great game in a primetime environment. Purdue gave up 546 yards but only 20 points to come away with the biggest win in the Jeff Brohm era.

2. This is becoming an annual thing for overrated Buckeyes

Didn’t Ohio State’s loss Saturday night look exactly like the Buckeyes’ 55-24 loss at Iowa last year that cost them a playoff spot? Urban Meyer didn’t mind pointing out after the game that Purdue’s exposed their flaws, but are they really flaws that should lead to a 29-point loss when you need the game so badly? To me, this is just not showing up when it matters. There’s just no way you can brag — and no one brags like Ohio State folks — and then stumble so badly against unranked team. Forget the Playoffs now? Maybe.

3. Purdue now definitely in Big Ten West title race

We’ve been talking about Wisconsin as prohibitive favorites in the Big Ten West, and we’ve laid out a lot of scenarios for how Iowa can still win the division, but I guess now we really have to talk seriously about Purdue’s ability to win the division as well. They have just the one Big Ten loss (Northwestern in the opener) and control their own destiny with games against Iowa (Nov. 3) and Wisconsin (Nov. 17) still on the schedule. Look, if the Boilers can beat Ohio State, they can beat anybody. Suddenly, I like their chances, which is saying something.

4. Spartans, Wolverines act like children before rivalry game …

Sure, I understand the intensity of the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry, and it’s a great one. But it’s a shame all the little childish antics took away from it. The pregame stunts that went on during Michigan State’s stroll down the field didn’t need to happen, nor did Devin Bush scuffing up the logo beforehand. Just play the game, boys, and then celebrate. And by the way, after the win, I had no problem with celebrating on the Spartans logo. That’s a perk of winning on the road. Double standard? Maybe. But when you win, you get to celebrate.

5. … But Michigan’s defense played like men

Michigan’s defense was ridiculously good Saturday, holding the Spartans to a stunning 94 total yards of offense. Brian Lewerke was 5-for-25 passing — let’s say that again, 5-for-25 — for only 66 yards and their only points in the 21-7 loss came on a trick play. That just might have been the best defensive performance I’ve ever seen in such a big game, and they even did it with Rashan Gary, who missed a second straight game with an injury. The Wolverines are clearly the best team in the Big Ten right now, and what’s scary is that they keep getting better every week.

6. Congrats, Scott Frost! Welcome to the club

It took a lot longer than expected, but Scott Frost and Nebraska finally won a game Saturday, beating Minnesota at home 53-28. That six-game losing streak to start the season is finally a thing of the past, and it’s a good thing since it’s never happened before in Nebraska history. Major props to true freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez. He had another great game, going 25-for-29 passing for 276 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for another 125 yards and a score. The kid’s been great, and the future is bright.

7. Why can’t we ever get a good feel for this Northwestern team?

Northwestern is 4-1 in the Big Ten and its only loss came to Michigan on a late fourth-quater rally. But it’s really hard to tell if they’re any good or not. Saturday was a perfect example. The Wildcats were playing Rutgers, probably the worst Power 5 team in the country, and a team that hasn’t been competitive at all. Northwestern barely won, 18-15. Rutgers has been outscored 245-71 in its six losses before Saturday. Yeah, I know a win is a win, but what does it mean going forward? Their next three games are against No. 23 Wisconsin, No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 18 Iowa. Can they win any of those?

8. Iowa’s shutout further proof that defense is elite

Iowa’s defense continues to impress, and the 23-0 win over Maryland Saturday added to their impressive resume this season. Maryland had only 115 yards of total offense, and that’s amazing that Iowa’s performance was only second-best in the conference this weekend behind Michigan. It’s going to be interesting to see if that defense can carry the day the next two weeks against Penn State and Purdue. It’s hard to say no the way this group is playing.

9. Purdue is a team to watch out for going forward

… ”Don’t be surprised if Purdue doesn’t still have a say in who’s going to win this division. Saturday’s game with Ohio State is going to be interesting.” Oh wait, that was No. 9 last week. Sorry, needed one more reminder. In all seriousness, though, the oft-maligned Big Ten West is sure to be entertaining the rest of the way. There’s plenty of teams with reasonable shots now.

10. Ohio State still controls SOME of its destiny

The Buckeyes can still win the Big Ten East by winning out, and that includes beating Michigan in the regular-season finale. They do that, they punch their ticket to the Big Ten Championship Game, where they would probable still be the favorite, despite Saturday’s loss. So what really changes after the loss to Purdue? Not much, really, about their Big Ten title chances, but what we learned last year was that the Playoff selection committee doesn’t take kindly to ugly losses against unranked teams. Are those Playoff hopes gone now, no matter what happens? I think so.
