Defense wins championships is a good motto to have. Recently, 247Sports’ Brad Crawford released his projection of the top 10 defenses in college football for 2022. With no surprise, Crawford has Nick Saban’s Alabama at No. 1, Clemson at No. 2, and Georgia at No. 3.

Crawford had three B1G teams at four through six to finish among the best defenses in the nation. Crawford has Iowa at No. 4, Ohio State at No. 5, and Wisconsin at No. 6.

Iowa returns eight players on its defense from a group that finished the 2021 season as the 13th-ranked scoring defense (19.2 points allowed per game) in the country. Star linebacker Jack Campbell returns to anchor the unit.

Ohio State looks to rebound this 2022 season with on defense after finishing 38th in points allowed per game (22.8). Jim Knowles was brought in as DC to fix the unit and is tasked with producing a top-10 unit immediately.

Wisconsin lost 8 full-time starters from last season on a defense that finished 4th in points allowed per game (16.2) and 1st in rushing yards allowed per game (64.8) and total yards allowed per game (239.1). The Badgers will have a defense that will potentially replicate those numbers.
