3 B1G hoops programs among power conference teams without transfer addition for 2022-23
In the world of college basketball, recruiting remains the lifeblood of a program. However, the transfer portal has changed how programs can retool and regroup for a new season.
In particular, Illinois is a program that utilized both recruiting and the transfer portal heavily this offseason. The Illini added an elite recruiting class and also picked up some notable transfers to boost the 2022-23 squad.

According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, there are currently 6 programs from major conferences that have not gone to the transfer portal for a player this offseason. Michigan State, Indiana and Iowa out of the B1G are included.
UCLA, USC and Villanova are the other programs.
A year ago, only 4 power conference (P5 & BE) programs – Purdue, Stanford, UConn, & Villanova – did not add a transfer during the offseason.
As of now, the following 6 power conference programs did not add a transfer entering 22-23:
Indiana
Iowa
Michigan St
UCLA
USC
Villanova— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) August 19, 2022
To be fair, totally passing on the transfer portal is not automatically a good sign. Then again, it could indicate those teams are confident in their talent level and depth for 2022-23.
We’ll find out which is the case once the season starts this fall.
