The creation of the NCAA transfer database has made life a lot easier for student-athletes looking to find a new home. Since the portal’s emergence a few years ago, there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of football players who have decided to transfer.

A strong percentage of players hitting the portal have been quarterbacks, with several high-profile players opting to look for opportunities elsewhere.

Recently, 247Sports’ Chris Hummer dove into some of the numbers when it comes to quarterbacks hitting the transfer portal. He put a pretty big focus on the 4- and 5-star prospects, too.

They are transferring at a really high rate.

According to Hummer’s story, a total of 63% of the 248 quarterbacks with a 4- or 5-star rating between 2010-19 transferred at least one time. Between 2016-19, that percentage was even higher, coming in at 68%.

Based on those numbers, there’s essentially a 30% chance a blue-chip quarterback will stick with the program he commits to out of high school. Those are pretty low odds.

It’s an interesting study and one that speaks to how much college football has changed over the past decade. The creation of the transfer portal has only accelerated the situation.
