It’s mid-October now and we’re basically halfway through the college football season. And we’ve hit that stage in the season now where we’re basically going to have a high-profile game or two in the Big Ten every week now.

We’ve certainly got that Saturday, most notably with Wisconsin’s visit to Michigan. There are other interesting nuggets throughout the league, too.

Here are the five juiciest storylines this week in Week 7:

1. No. 1 vs. No. 1, sort of, under the lights in Ann Arbor

Michigan is No. 1 in the country in total defense  and Wisconsin’s running game is No. 1in the country after the three option schools (Army, Navy, Georgia Tech), so something’s got to give in this epic showdown under the lights in the Big House. It’s going to be a great day in Ann Arbor, starting with ESPN’s College Gameday setting up camp in the morning and then a big game under the lights on a crisp October evening. Michigan’s defense is salivating at the chance to shut down Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin’s great running back.  “It definitely does motivate me,” Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich said of the Wisconsin challenge. “I heard the same thing about Ohio State. I hope they run to my side every single time.”

2. Which quarterback leads the game-winning drive?

Shea Patterson came to Michigan for games like this. The Ole Miss transfer has been pretty good so far and he’s been the quarterback the Wolverines have needed to reach the next level this season. They haven’t reached that level quite yet, but they can with Patterson at the helm. He’s going to need to be big Saturday night and win the individual dual with Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook. He’s already pulled off a monstrous game-winning drive on the road this season, beating Iowa three weeks ago when he went 5-for-5 on a late fourth-quarter drive. Someone becomes a star Saturday night. Who’s it going to be?

3. Can a depleted Iowa team pull off a rare road-win double?

Iowa is hoping for a Wisconsin loss to get back into the Big Ten West race, but the Hawkeyes have a big task on their hands Saturday at Indiana. First off, they are really banged-up all of a sudden, and they’re going to be missing guys at several key positions. Secondly, Iowa has won back-to-back conference road games on consecutive Saturdays only once in eight tries since 2010. The Hawkeyes are favored by five points, but they are clearly on, umm, Upset Alert.

4. Will Michigan State’s troubles continue at Penn State?

Michigan State has been injury riddled and struggling, and this is one tough test going into Penn State. There just doesn’t seem to be many scenarios where the Spartans can come away with a win here. They’ve had success against Penn State through the years, but this year’s team isn’t as good as the 2017 version. Plus, Penn State has had a week off to recover from the one-point loss to Ohio State, so it should be ready to roll Saturday. Might this one get ugly?

5. Nebraska has to win a game sometime, don’t they?

There’s a ton of pressure that’s starting to mount in Lincoln, simply because every loss in a winless season continues to get magnified. Not job-loss pressure, of course, because Scott Frost is going to be the coach at Nebraska for a very long time. But the Cornhuskers, who have a long way to go, at least have their quarterback of the present and the future in Adrian Martinez and that first win might come today at Northwestern. There’s going to come a time when Nebraska is great again, but it’s a little while off.
