There are plenty of interesting things going on in the Big Ten this weekend, headlined by the huge showdown between Michigan and Michigan State in East Lansings. It’s going to be a big day from morning through the night, as it should in mid-October.

Here are the five juiciest storylines in the Big Ten in Week 8:

1. Michigan has lost 17 in a row on the road vs. ranked opponents

It’s crazy that a school with Michigan’s reputation through the years could have a losing streak this long. They haven’t beaten a ranked team on the road since beating Notre Dame in September of 2006. That’s more than 12 years ago! Six of those losses came at Ohio State, the most of anyone, but right behind is Michigan State at three. The Spartans have snuck back in to the rankings this week, checking in at No. 24 after their big win at Penn State, so this streak could come to an end Saturday. Jim Harbaugh is 0-4 in this situation at Michigan, including the season-opening loss to Notre Dame this year.

2. Nebraska has to end its six-game losing streak to start the season

Speaking of historic losing streaks, Nebraska has one of its own. The Cornhuskers are 0-6 to start the season, and that’s never happened before in the century-plus they’ve been playing football in Lincoln. That’s never, folks! This wasn’t how the Scott Frost era was supposed to begin, and it hasn’t been a happy homecoming thus far. Minnesota comes in to town Saturday and the Huskers are a 4-point favorite, so this could be the day.

3. Ohio State’s house of horrors is … in West Lafayette?

Ohio State almost never loses, so it’s shocking to report that they actually have a losing record in West Lafayette during their last seven visits. They are 3-4 during those last seven trips, dating back to 2000 when Drew Brees lit up the Buckeyes for Purdue. Ohio State is the favorite this week — the number is up to 12 now — but Purdue has been playing well lately and could stick around if QB David Blough has a big day. He’s averaging 393 yards passing in his last four games, but Dwayne Haskins has been just as good all year. He’s thrown for a whopping 2,331 yards in seven games, with 28 TD passes and only four interceptions. These two guys might throw for a thousand combined yards on Saturday.

4. Iowa looks to keep Big Ten West race interesting

Iowa is 5-1, with the one loss that heartbreaker at home to Wisconsin back in September. But since then, the Hawkeyes have won two road games (Minnesota, Indiana) and are looking really good. Maryland comes to Iowa City Saturday, so the Hawkeyes should keep it rolling. Wisconsin sure seems vulnerable now after its ugly loss last Saturday, so this division race isn’t over. Iowa’s offense is humming, and expect more or the same from quarterback Nate Stanley against the Terps. Stanley threw six touchdown passes against Indiana last week.

5. Penn State needs to turn its season around quickly

The Nittany Lions are on a two-game losing streak after starting the season 4-0, so it’s critical that they head into Indiana and come out with a win to get their season back on track. There was no shame in the one-point loss to Ohio State, but blowing a fourth-quarter lead last week to Michigan State was shocking and unacceptable. Penn State is a 14-point favorite, but you never know what you’re going to get with Indiana, who had a player’s only meeting this week and is fired up to get a signature win of its own. Penn State better be careful.
