One of the top prospects from Alabama’s 2021 recruiting class may be on his way out of Tuscaloosa.

Former 5-star recruit and Crimson Tide running back Camar Wheaton has been away from the team and is not expected to return to the squad, according to a report from 247Sports’ Chris Hummer. Wheaton is thought to be heading for the transfer portal next.

Wheaton was the seventh highest-ranked member of Alabama’s 2021 recruiting class, which contained 27 prospects. Overall, he ranked No. 34 nationally and was considered the No. 3 running back of the cycle.

Wheaton is a native of Garland, Texas and received more than two dozen offers on the recruiting front. The running back dealt with an injury during the 2021 season and did not any playing time for the Crimson Tide as a true freshman.

If he does enter the NCAA transfer portal, Wheaton will still have all 4 years of eligibility to use at his next destination.

Most of the offers Wheaton received came out of the SEC, but some B1G teams did express interest in the highly-ranked running back. Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State and Purdue all offered the Texas native.
