There hasn’t been a new NCAA Football video game since the 2014 version was released six years ago, but there’s a possibility that EA Sports could be jumping back into the market.

Last week, the NCAA established a new working group to look into the idea of paying student-athletes for name, image and likeness. In the past, those kind of payments have been against the organization’s amateurism policies.

But with the new working group looking into that situation, it opens the door for a possible return of the popular NCAA Football video game created by EA Sports. And the company is “very interested” in bringing the game back.

“We loved making college football games,” former NCAA Football Executive Producer Ben Haumiller told 247Sports. “If the opportunity ever presented itself we’d be very interested in potentially getting back into that space.”

EA was reportedly willing to pay student-athletes in the past to continue making the video game, but it went against the NCAA’s rules. Lawsuits over athlete likeness ended the circulation of the game and EA Sports did not renew its contract with the NCAA.

Recently, the latest Madden game will have a College Football Playoff feature, allowing the user to select one of 10 college programs to play in the four-team playoff. That’s as close of a return to NCAA Football as we’ve seen over the last six years.

There’s still a lot of obstacles in the way, but EA Sports’ willingness to recreate the game will have fans pushing the NCAA’s working group to get something accomplished to see NCAA Football return to the store shelves.
