The field contenting for the national championship this season is bigger than it’s been the last few seasons, but most analyst are very high on three teams at the moment — Alabama, Ohio State and LSU.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Desmond Howard debated which one they’d pick as No. 1 right now on College GameDay on Saturday morning.

“If you look at resume and resume alone, you have to make a strong argument for LSU, but if you look at the beginning of the season through six or seven weeks with offense, defense and special teams, I think it’s been Ohio State as the most complete team,” said Herbstreit.

Ohio State is beating teams by more than 41 points per game, but LSU has knocked off two Top 10 teams.

“LSU is the No. 1 team in the nation,” Corso said. They beat Texas and Florida, both ranked teams and without any current weaknesses. They’re No. 1 and have been playing like No. 1 having beaten two ranked teams.”

However, Howard isn’t buying the LSU stock and stuck with the college football favorite over the last few years.

“I absolutely love LSU’s offense, but they don’t have a championship defense,” Howard said. “I can’t put LSU No. 1. I’m still just leaning towards Alabama. … I’m still going Alabama (over Ohio State) by a thin margin.”

LSU and Alabama will square off on Nov. 9, so that matchup will settle the Tigers-Crimson Tide debate. But Ohio State will have to make the College Football Playoff to face either of those teams this season.
