B1G Basketball Power Rankings, Feb. 5: Purdue's win over Wisconsin anchors No. 1 spot for Boilermakers
The Big Ten basketball season is rolling onward as the race for the league title and March Madness continues.
At the top, Purdue continues to be locked into the No. 1 spot in the conference. The Boilermakers also continue their trend toward a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament when the postseason rolls around.
Illinois and Wisconsin also stand poised as contenders for the league title, but the race for the final double bye in the B1G tournament remains a muddled mess. At the bottom of the standings, the heat on seats in Ann Arbor and Columbus is getting cranked up.
Here are the latest B1G Power Rankings shape up as we hit the first full week of February:
14. Michigan (7-15; 2-9)
Michigan is 1-10 in its last 11 games. Thankfully, that win came against Ohio State, but that doesn’t change the outlook in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines most recently accomplished the rare feat of blowing a double-digit lead and losing by double digits.
13. Ohio State (13-9; 3-8)
Ohio State and Michigan appear to be in a race to see which team can drive off a cliff first. The Buckeyes have a 1-game lead from the bottom of the B1G standings, but Chris Holtmann’s squad also lost to the Wolverines in Ann Arbor. Either way, Ohio State is 1-7 in its last 8 with 4 straight losses, so consider it a “hot seat” situation in Columbus.
12. Rutgers (11-10; 3-7)
A bounce-back win over Michigan does not mean much for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers is on track for its worst finish since 2017-18 when the team went 3-15 in league play.
11. Indiana (13-9; 5-6)
The wheels are starting to fall off in Bloomington for Mike Woodson. The Hoosiers have gone just 2-5 in their last 7 games, including disappointing losses to Rutgers and Penn State.
10. Penn State (11-11; 5-6)
Mike Rhoades’ first season with Penn State has had some bumps and bruises, but the Nittany Lions have produced their fair share of high moments. That includes recent back-to-back road wins over Rutgers and Indiana.
9. Maryland (13-9; 5-6)
Maryland has rallied to produce a solid showing in the B1G after an abysmal nonconference slate. Still, the Terrapins will need a miracle to find a way into a strong finish this season.
8. Iowa (13-9; 5-6)
Iowa is included in the main group of B1G teams with the label of “inconsistent.” Simply put, it’s not a great sign that Iowa’s 2 wins since the middle of January came against Michigan and Ohio State.
7. Minnesota (14-7; 5-5)
How improved is Minnesota in Ben Johnson’s third season? The Gophers had a 4-game losing streak recently but are back to .500 in league play with 2 straight wins since. The last time Minnesota won more than 5 league games came in 2020-21 when the program went 6-14 in B1G play.
6. Nebraska (16-7; 6-6)
Nebraska rebounded from its loss to Maryland in impressive fashion, beating a top-10 Wisconsin team at home and going to overtime with Illinois on the road. CJ Wilcher helped engineer that win over the Badgers with 22 points off the bench.
5. Michigan State (14-8; 6-5)
Michigan State still remains on the upswing, even if the Spartans showed they still have a ways to go with the loss to Wisconsin. Tom Izzo getting win No. 700 is certainly a bright spot as the Spartans get another manageable stretch to keep the momentum rolling.
4. Northwestern (15-7; 6-5)
Northwestern’s search for consistency continues. After Purdue poured in 105 points in revenge for an early-season loss, the Wildcats also lost to Minnesota on the road. A double bye in the B1G Tournament is certainly on the table but not if the Wildcats continue their inconsistent flow.
3. Illinois (17-5; 8-3)
Illinois continues to look strong with recent wins over Ohio State and an overtime victory of Nebraska. The Illini can attack teams a number of ways with a 3-headed monster of Terrence Shannon Jr., Marcus Domask and Coleman Hawkins doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
2. Wisconsin (16-6; 8-3)
It looks like the Badgers may have been caught looking ahead. Wisconsin came off an impressive home win against Michigan State but lost to Nebraska before the crucial matchup with Purdue. As a result, Wisconsin went from first place in the league to 1.5 games behind the Boilermakers. A shot at the B1G championship is still in reach, but it’s paramount the Badgers reestablish their consistency.
1. Purdue (21-2; 10-2)
The Boilermakers are rolling, rattling off 7 straight wins since their last loss on the road at Nebraska. Purdue’s first big test of the B1G season (a road trip to Wisconsin) was a worthy fight. Ultimately, a double-double from Zach Edey and 20 points from Lance Jones was too much for the Badgers. The Boilermakers continue to close in on a regular-season B1G title and potential No. 1 seed in March Madness.
