B1G bowl projections, Week 7: Still four unbeatens
Another week, another step closer to perfection for four Big Ten teams.
Ohio State got the week off and Penn State, Wisconsin and Minnesota earned victories on Saturday, leaving those four as undefeated teams heading into mid October. That is something for the College Football Playoff committee to consider, for sure.
That the B1G still has four unbeatens has to be exciting for the league’s fans considering that there are only five undefeated teams throughout the other four Power 5 conferences — Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Clemson and Baylor.
Minnesota blew out Nebraska on Saturday and, though the strength of schedule still leaves something to be desired, the Golden Gophers earn their way up the B1G bowl pecking order. We now project them into a spot in the Holiday Bowl for what would be an enticing matchup against Washington.
Wisconsin, which posted its mind-boggling fourth shutout this season, shuffles from the Cotton to the Orange Bowl as the B1G/SEC team facing off against the ACC representative. Notre Dame could still wreck all of that (or the CFP order for that matter) but the Badgers stay warm for New Year’s either way.
Also, Indiana joins our list this week, not because of that rout against Rutgers (that was predictable) but because Nebraska and Northwestern have been disappointing. The thought here is that the Hoosiers can beat at least one of those teams in the next few weeks. Games against Penn State and Michigan are unlikely to go well but if IU can split the remaining four — at Maryland, at Nebraska, vs. Northwestern and at Purdue — then Tom Allen’s team will reach the six wins necessary for bowl eligibility.
Now, on to our B1G bowl projections, in the conference’s approximate bowl selection order:
