A pair of Big Ten head coaches appeared inside ESPN’s ranking of the top 10 coaches for 2024 on Friday.

Oregon’s Dan Lanning and Ohio State’s Ryan Day both cracked the top 10.

Some new faces will be around the B1G in 2024. Lanning will be joining former Pac-12 foe USC in the conference. Washington as well as UCLA are also set to play in B1G country in the fall. There are also other newcomers elsewhere in the conference at head coach, such as Sherrone Moore at Michigan, Jonathan Smith at Michigan State and Jedd Fisch for the Huskies to name a few.

Other featured coaches inside the top 10 were Kirby Smart, Kalen DeBoer, Kyle Whittingham, Dabo Swinney, Mike Norvell, Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, and Lance Leipold. Here’s a breakdown of the Big Ten coaches who did — and didn’t — make the cut:

Ducks find a new pond in the B1G

Lanning was ranked as the 6th-best HC in college football with the 2024 season approaching. His 1st-ever head coaching gig has been a success so far.

The former Georgia assistant has won at least 10 games or more in both of his seasons since taking over for Mario Cristobal at Oregon in 2022. Lanning followed up a 10-win campaign in 2022 by winning 12 games the following season. The Ducks beat Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl for the program’s 1st New Year’s 6 Bowl win since 2019. It’ll be interesting to see how Lanning handles B1G competition.

Overall, Lanning is 22-5 as Oregon’s head coach. However, the 2024 campaign will be his first without quarterback Bo Nix under center.

Day’s resume stands out for Buckeyes

Despite struggling against Michigan lately, it’s hard to argue that Day shouldn’t be featured in the top 10. Ohio State has been very consistent under Day, who took the 10th and final spot on the list.

The stats for Day in Columbus speak for themselves. The Buckeyes have never lost more than 2 games in a season with him at the helm. However, Ohio State fans will be expecting Day and the Buckeyes to break a 3-game losing streak to rival Michigan in 2024. That streak is perhaps why Day is not further up this list.

Notable B1G snubs outside top 10

The Big Ten also had coaches who just missed the cut. Kirk Ferentz, Lincoln Riley and Luke Fickell all found themselves in the others to receive votes section. James Franklin, notably, did not receive a vote from any of ESPN’s panelists.

Riley had a down year with USC in 2023 but has consistently won at multiple programs. His overall record is still 74-18 and he’s produced Heisman winners like Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield and most recently Caleb Williams.

Another questionable decision was to leave out Franklin. Franklin’s Penn State teams haven’t been able to get over the hump against the likes of Michigan and Ohio State. However, Franklin does have 5 double-digit win seasons at Penn State and won 9 games at Vanderbilt twice.

Ferentz was also left out despite leading Iowa to bowl eligibility in 11 straight seasons. The Hawkeyes have won the Big Ten West twice in the last 3 seasons.

While there were some interesting coaches left out, B1G programs like these have plenty to feel good about.
