Two names out of the B1G were honored by being named to the AllState/AFCA Good Works Team this week.

Penn State senior linebacker Brandon Smith and Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald were listed on the FBS Good Works team for their “dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others.” The selection is meant to honor players and coaches in college football who make significant contributions to society and their communities.

The AllState/AFCA has been honoring players who volunteer and give back to their communities since 1992. An official statement from the website describes the prestigious, community-driven honor:

The student-athletes nominated for this esteemed award embody the true spirit of teamwork and selflessness, donating their limited free time to helping and serving others. From founding a non-profit that helps orphans secure jobs in the workforce to raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research, the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® nominees may wear different jerseys on the field, but they all exemplify a superior commitment to giving back off of it.

Smith has appeared in one game thus far for the Nittany Lions, making four tackles in the season opener against Akron. Fitzgerald has the Wildcats at 2-1 after finishing up non-conference play last Saturday.
