This wasn’t an overly exciting week of B1G action.

Six games filled the Saturday slate in the conference this week and all six were determined by double digits. While there were some late touchdowns to make the final scores in a few games appear a little more lopsided, there just weren’t many interesting games.

Northwestern did score an upset over No. 20 Michigan State and Indiana battled No. 3 Ohio State tough for three quarters. Outside of those games, though, most were decided by halftime.

Next week should provide us with a little more entertainment. Until then, we’ll take a look at the B1G power rankings following Week 6 action.

14. Rutgers, 1-5 (lost to Illinois 38-17)

Illinois hadn’t won defeated a B1G opponent in 700 days. And yet, the Illini knocked off Rutgers by three touchdowns. Add that to the growing list of embarrassing performances for the Scarlet Knights this season.

13. Nebraska, 0-5 (lost to No. 16 Wisconsin 41-24)

Another spectacular performance from Adrian Martinez and the offense was wasted. Nebraska was flagged 10 times for 100 yards and the defense couldn’t stop Wisconsin’s rushing attack. The Huskers are making progress, but the defense continues to be awful.

12. Illinois, 3-2 (def. Rutgers 38-17)

“We need a B1G win in the worst way,” is what Lovie Smith told the media earlier this week. Well, Coach, you got it. A 700-day, 13-game losing streak against B1G opponents is finally over. The Illini are now 1-1 in league play.

11. Minnesota, 3-2 (lost to Iowa 48-31)

The Gophers’ secondary just isn’t the same without Antoine Winfield Jr. Iowa may have exposed a major weakness in Minnesota’s defense. Injuries and inexperience are really affecting Minnesota right now. It may not row to very many B1G wins this season.

10. Purdue, 2-3 (bye week)

It was a bye week in West Lafayette. The Boilers get a chance to improve to .500 next week vs. Illinois.

9.  Maryland, 4-2 (lost to No. 15 Michigan 42-21)

Maryland jumped out to an early 7-3 lead thanks to a Ty Johnson 98-yard kickoff returned for a touchdown. But that was about the only bright spot for the Terrapins on Saturday. Considering how tough Michigan’s defense has been, it’s hard to judge Maryland’s offense. Still, totaling just 220 yards isn’t great.

8. Indiana, 4-2 (lost to No. 3 Ohio Sa State 49-26)

After an underwhelming performance against Rutgers a week ago, it was hard to know what to expect out of Indiana as it entered Columbus. But the Hoosiers took the fight to No. 3 Ohio State. They fought hard, but IU still doesn’t have the same talent as the Buckeyes. Still, it was impressive to see Tom Allen’s team have a chance against one of the best teams in the country through three quarters.

7. Michigan State, 3-2 (lost to Northwestern 29-19)

Woof. Michigan State has got to figure something out on the offensive line and in the rushing attack. Otherwise, the Spartans may struggle to reach bowl eligibility. The defense played well enough to win, but this was another bad outing for Mark Dantonio’s offense.

6. Northwestern, 2-3 (def. No. 20 Michigan State 29-19)

Never count out Pat Fitzgerald and the Wildcats. Never. Clayton Thorson delivered a brilliant performance, throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Northwestern’s win was particularly impressive considering it ran for just eight yards in the game. EIGHT!

5. Iowa, 4-1 (def. Minnesota 48-31)

Iowa may have found its passing attack. Nate Stanley threw for over 300 yards and had four touchdown passes as the Hawkeyes took down Minnesota in a shootout. Weird, right? If Iowa’s offense continues to click, there’s no reason to believe this team can’t win 10 games this season. But the big outing came against Minnesota, so we’ll pump the brakes just a bit.

4. Wisconsin, 4-1 (def. Nebraska 41-24)

An overpowering offensive line and an all-star running back were too much for Nebraska. Jonathan Taylor rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns as Wisconsin cruised to a three-score victory. But if there’s one thing to be concerned with, it’s that the Badgers surrendered over 500 yards to the Huskers on Saturday night. That hardly ever happens.

3. Michigan, 5-1 (def. Maryland 42-21)

The win over Maryland was a nice confidence booster headed into an incredibly challenging slate. Over the last five weeks, Michigan has looked like a top tree team in the B1G. But how will the Wolverines handle games against Wisconsin, Michigan State and Penn State over the next month? We’re about to find out a lot more about Jim Harbaugh’s team.

2. Penn State, 4-1 (bye week)

Penn State gets a week off before hosting Michigan State next Saturday.

1. Ohio State, 6-0 (def. Indiana 49-26)

If there was anyone else even close to its level, Ohio State would’ve been demoted this week. The Buckeyes had another hangover performance against Indiana, though this time it didn’t cost them a win. Dwayne Haskins was still incredibly impressive, throwing for over 400 yards and six touchdowns in the victory.
